Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure designed to inspect, diagnose, and repair damage inside the elbow joint. It is performed with the help of a camera attached to a fiber-optic instrument (arthroscope) which is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Images from the inside of the elbow are projected onto a television screen.
If you suffer from pain, swelling and stiffness of the elbow, elbow arthroscopy could be a choice of treatment for you. However, this procedure is recommended mostly in those cases when non-surgical treatments (such as rest, anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections and physical therapy) are not effective. Elbow arthroscopy may relieve symptoms of age-related conditions, wear and tear and sports injuries. The most common disorders that may be repaired with elbow arthroscopy include tennis elbow, loose bodies (cartilage or bone fragments) blocking elbow motion, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteochondritis dissecans.
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure, so anaesthesia is required. Either general or regional anaesthesia may be administered. In the first instance, you will be fully asleep during the whole procedure. Regional anaesthesia means your arm will be completely numbed and you will be given sedation in order to calm your nerves. As a first step of the surgery, the surgeon will make several tiny incisions in the area of your elbow. Then he or she will insert thin tubes into the joint. The joint space will be filled with a sterile fluid in order to improve the quality of view and to decrease the risk of blood vessels and nerve injury. The arthroscope and all surgical tools are inserted through those thin tubes. The surgeon will observe your elbow joint, identify the problem and repair it. Everything including cutting, shaving, loose bodies’ removal and suturing will be done through those thin tubes without opening the joint. At the end of the surgery, incisions will be stitched and covered with sterile plasters. In some cases a splint is used to prevent movement and protect your elbow.
You may feel some discomfort and pain in the elbow after the arthroscopy procedure and this is completely normal. It may last for about one week, but painkillers, ice and elevation of the elbow will definitely relieve these symptoms. Recovery after arthroscopy is quicker compared to an open surgery. However, returning to work and daily activities may still take weeks and should be discussed with your doctor.
Although elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure and does not require big incisions, there are some possible risks as with any type of surgery. These include infection, nerve damage and bleeding. However, complications after elbow arthroscopy are rare and most patients do not experience it at all.
