11 reasons that make us the most popular orthopaedic clinic abroad

One of the most important factors for a quick and full recovery after surgery is proper rehabilitation. Usually, clinics are not able to offer this due to costs savings. Our patients can choose between two inpatient and outpatient options: rehabilitation with a physiotherapist of the Lithuanian national basketball team, prof. L. Siupsinskas or rehabilitation at a medical SPA.

Our team of 5 orthopaedic surgeons has 10-20 years of experience in the field in total performing over 1.000 different orthopaedic surgeries per year. Moreover, our surgeons are members of various prestigious surgical societies both Lithuanian and international. Our leading joint replacement surgeon S. Tarasevicius is an author of 150 scientific publications in different medical journals, who has performed more than 3.500 joint replacement surgeries during 15+ years of his professional experience.

Being a true member of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries, Lithuania is one of the leaders in low joint replacement revision rates, as only 9% of surgeries in Lithuania require revision in 10 years after surgery. Moreover, with the implants used at our clinic, only 2-3% of surgeries require revision in 10 years after surgery, while revision rates in some other Western countries, for example, USA, is as high as 17% in 10 years after surgery. The implants used at our clinic have been evaluated by other countries’ registries as those ensuring longest implant life, as compared to products of other manufacturers. Moreover, thanks to our active participation in collecting data for the registries, the surgical technique used at our clinic ensures best surgical outcomes.

What is a long toe and what are the symptoms?

The longest toe is most often the 2nd or the 3rd toe. Over time, excessive pressure from the shoes makes the long toe bend and deform which leads to pain, discomfort, and skin build-up (calluses and corns). The long toe also makes it very difficult to find comfortable footwear. Toe shortening is a favorable choice for those patients who wish to relieve pain and achieve a good cosmetic appearance.

How is toe shortening surgery performed?

Toe shortening is a surgery to correct the uncomfortably long toe. It is a relatively short procedure, taking about 45 to 60 minutes to complete. Since it is performed under local anaesthesia, toe shortening can be combined with other procedures, such as bunionectomy.

Possible complications
What happens after toe shortening surgery?

After surgery, patients stay in the hospital overnight. The operated foot is locally anaesthetized so the patients can rest comfortably.

When recovering at home, pain is controlled with over-the-counter pain medications, like naproxen or ibuprofen. The operated foot should be kept elevated as much as possible to minimize swelling and discomfort. Ice packs can be applied for short intervals of time to relieve pain.

How long does it take to recover from toe shortening?

Within a few days post-op, patients can start walking with a special boot being very careful to not hurt the operated toe. The bandage must be kept dry and changed every 3 to 5 days. After 4 to 6 weeks, patients come in for an X-ray scan which the surgeon then evaluates during a follow-up consultation. The wire is taken out after the toe has fully healed. At around 6 weeks post-op, patients can return to work and other everyday activities. However, it can take about 3 to 6 months until the swelling goes down completely and the toe regains full mobility.

Are the results permanent?

Toe shortening is a relatively short surgery that provides permanent results. It alleviates pain, prevents further toe damage, and gives the desired aesthetic look.
