Today back pain is a common problem affecting millions of people all over the world. It limits everyday activities, requires substantial financial costs and significantly decreases the quality of life. There are plenty of causes that may provoke back pain varying from easily solvable factors, such as uncomfortable bed or improper posture, to severe conditions, like bone diseases or trauma.
Knowledge of the healthy spine anatomy may help to understand the development of back pain. The main spine structure, also called vertebral column, includes vertebrae, spinal discs, ligaments and muscles. 31 vertebrae compose a bony canal through which the spinal cord passes and spinal nerves branch off. Spaces between the vertebrae are filled with spinal discs that serve like shock absorbers. A healthy spine is straight looking from the front and has four anatomical curves viewing from the side. A person suffers from pain when some of spinal structures get damaged or when spinal nerves become irritated and inflamed.
Surgical treatment for back pain is always recommended when conservative treatment (physical therapy, exercises and medications) is futile.
