11 reasons that make us the most popular orthopaedic clinic abroad

One of the most important factors for a quick and full recovery after surgery is proper rehabilitation. Usually, clinics are not able to offer this due to costs savings. Our patients can choose between two inpatient and outpatient options: rehabilitation with a physiotherapist of the Lithuanian national basketball team, prof. L. Siupsinskas or rehabilitation at a medical SPA.

Our team of 5 orthopaedic surgeons has 10-20 years of experience in the field in total performing over 1.000 different orthopaedic surgeries per year. Moreover, our surgeons are members of various prestigious surgical societies both Lithuanian and international. Our leading joint replacement surgeon S. Tarasevicius is an author of 150 scientific publications in different medical journals, who has performed more than 3.500 joint replacement surgeries during 15+ years of his professional experience.

Being a true member of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries, Lithuania is one of the leaders in low joint replacement revision rates, as only 9% of surgeries in Lithuania require revision in 10 years after surgery. Moreover, with the implants used at our clinic, only 2-3% of surgeries require revision in 10 years after surgery, while revision rates in some other Western countries, for example, USA, is as high as 17% in 10 years after surgery. The implants used at our clinic have been evaluated by other countries’ registries as those ensuring longest implant life, as compared to products of other manufacturers. Moreover, thanks to our active participation in collecting data for the registries, the surgical technique used at our clinic ensures best surgical outcomes.

Our clinic works according to the highest standards set by the European Union. This helps to guarantee the quality of medical services. We care about the safety, comfort and successful results of our patients from all over the world.

What is it and why is it performed?

Shoulder arthroscopy (translated from Greek, arthros – a joint and skopein – to look) literally means “looking within a joint“. It is a so-called minimally invasive surgery enabling doctors to see the joint from the inside. It is called minimally invasive because no big incisions or opening of the joint are necessary with this technique. This reduces the risk of infections and bleeding. Shoulder arthroscopy is performed with the help of an arthroscope – a narrow tube that has a camera and a light at the end. This procedure is very beneficial in diagnosing and managing various joint disorders including damaged cartilage, torn ligaments and tendons, arthritis, shoulder impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tear.

How is it performed?

Even though minimally invasive, arthroscopy is still a surgical procedure, therefore anaesthesia is required. Possibly, but not necessarily, general anaesthesia will be administered. This means that you will be fully asleep and feel nothing during the whole procedure. Alternatively, you may receive regional anaesthesia. In this case, your arm and shoulder will be numbed to prevent pain and anti-anxiety medications will be given to calm your nerves. In the next step, a surgeon will make several tiny incisions (1-2 cm in length). Then, the joint space will be filled with a sterile saline solution in order to expand it. After that, the arthroscope and thin surgical instruments will be inserted through small incisions. The camera will project the images of the joint on a TV screen and perform the procedure. Depending on the severity of the shoulder damage the whole procedure usually takes 1-3 hours.

Is there any possible risks?

Generally, arthroscopy is considered to be a safe procedure and most patients do not experience any complications. However, there still is a small possibility of postarthroscopic chondrolysis (dissolution of the cartilage), nerve damage (0.2-3%), infection (0.16-1.9%) and thromboembolic complications (0.06-0.42%).

Recovery after shoulder arthroscopy

Although shoulder arthroscopy does not involve big incisions, the recovery period is quite long and varies from 1 to 6 months depending on what repairs were done. Pain and discomfort of the shoulder may last for several weeks after the procedure. Ice and painkillers will relieve pain and swelling. Also, it is usually recommended to wear a sling right after the procedure to protect your shoulder. Many people may return to light daily activities after a week. However, heavier physical activities may not be safe for several months after arthroscopy.
