What is meniscus?

The meniscus is a circular band on the top of the shinbone which functions as a soothing surface for the joint. Meniscus makes the knee stable and helps it to move smoothly. Meniscus also serves as a shock absorber since it divides the forces between the bones evenly.

There are two menisci in the knee. A medial meniscus, also known as the inner and the lateral meniscus, also called the outer.

Types of meniscus tears

Menisci are located between the tibia and femur bones. These ligaments are composed of cartilaginous tissue and may resemble rubbery cushions which function as ‘shock absorbers’. Menisci highly contribute to keeping the knee stable and protecting the bones from grinding into each other when moving.

Knee injuries mostly include various manifestations of meniscal tears. The meniscus is often torn because of traumatic events, injury, or degeneration, and anyone at any age can have their meniscus damaged. The injury may be caused by sudden twisting, rotating or squatting movements. Surgeons usually recommend arthroscopic knee surgery for the injuries that remain symptomatic. If a meniscus tear remains untreated, the risk of developing osteoarthritis later in life increases significantly. The choice of surgical method depends on the type of meniscus tear.

The symptoms and diagnosis of a meniscus tear

A meniscal tear is usually a result of a trauma or degenerative processes, and can be quite painful and debilitating. When the meniscus is damaged one is likely to hear a ‘pop’ sound and feel a ‘tearing’ sensation in the knee. Many people choose to continue walking even when their knee is injured. Unfortunately, the knee slowly swells and after approximately 6-12 hours becomes stiff and painful. A meniscal tear might also result in a free body, which can obstruct full knee flexion leading to a locked flexion.

In this case the patient might not be able to move the knee to its full range of motion. A meniscus tear can be diagnosed if there is tenderness within the joint, the joint is significantly effused, or there is a limited range of motion. There are specific tests which help to determine if the meniscus is torn, however, meniscal tears are best diagnosed through MRI scanning.

When meniscus repair is necessary?

Meniscus is usually damaged in sports when the knee is twisted while knee joint is bent or when you stop abruptly while running. It happens suddenly and in about 24 hours extreme pain, swelling and stiffness follow making it impossible to extend the leg.

However, meniscus tear may also develop gradually over period of time because cartilage begins to lose its elasticity and resiliency. This is more common among the older patients who have fragile cartilage. Then even seemingly minor slip or fall may tear meniscus severely. The injury may also happen when a heavy weight is put on the knees while kneeling or squatting.

The size and the extent of meniscus injury may vary broadly. It can be either torn around the edges or ripped in half or only thread might be left of it.

Torn meniscus repair surgery

A tornmeniscus is repaired arhroscopically as such surgery has a very high success rate and fewer risks of complications. During arthroscopic surgery minute instruments and a small camera are inserted in the knee joint and a surgeon repairs the tissue. The surgery is performed either under general or local anaesthesia.

Rehabilitation after meniscus repair

Usually, a patient wears a knee brace after the surgery so as to lessen swelling, and pain and keep the leg straight. Patients are advised to limit motion for 4 weeks and afterwards follow the physical therapy plan prescribed by your doctor so as to achieve successful healing.
