Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel is a narrow path in the wrist through which the median nerve and tendons go. When the pressure which rises due to swelling is put on the median nerve responsible for the movement and the senses of the palm, thumb, index and middle fingers carpal tunnel syndrome occurs. It causes pain, weakness and numbness.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually present in people who constantly make repeated movements of the hand and wrist, for instance while typing on a computer, driving, writing, sewing, using hand tools and in sports such as handball, golf, tennis and bowling. The condition may also be caused by various illnesses such as diabetes or arthritis. Most often carpal tunnel syndrome occurs to people who are 30 – 60 years old.
When carpal tunnel surgery is required?
Carpal tunnel surgery is recommended only for people who have severe carpal tunnel syndrome and when other non-surgical treatments do not help.
Carpal tunnel surgery
During carpal tunnel surgery the pain is relieved by realising the pressure placed on the median nerve. It is done by cutting a ligament in the wrist.
There are two approaches. The traditional way is open surgery, during which a surgeon makes incisions in the wrist and cuts the ligament in order to make the carpal tunnel wider. Cuts are closed with stitches.
The second technique which is more modern, is called endoscopic surgery. Either through one incision in the wrist or two incisions in the palm and the wrist a surgeon inserts surgical instruments and flexible tube with a tiny camera which is called endoscope and is used for a surgeon to see the carpal ligament. Then carpal ligament is cut and the incisions are stitched.
Both surgeries are performed under the local anaesthesia, meaning that only the hand and the wrist will be numbed.
It is observed that patients recover faster after the endoscopic surgery and scars are smaller, however in terms of efficiency both surgeries show equally high success rates.
Rehabilitation after carpal tunnel surgery
You will have to wear a bandage. If incisions were closed by dissolvable stitches they should be gone in 10 days, if non-dissolvable, they are removed in 10 – 14 days. It important to note that physical therapy speeds up the recovery. If the surgery was performed on your dominant hand rehabilitation may take 4 or more weeks. However, long term recovery of full range of movement is usually achieved in 1.5 to 3 months. Read more
